Finding Strength and Support in Times of Crisis

Suicide affects people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. It does not discriminate. When someone decides to end their life, the pain left behind is felt deeply by their loved ones, who must cope with grief and loss. But there is hope. You are not alone. Together, we can find strength and support to face difficult moments and hold on for just another day.

If you are in crisis, please call the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or text the Crisis Text Line at 741-741. Help is available.

Understanding the Impact of Suicide

Suicide is a complex issue that affects individuals and communities in profound ways. It is often the result of overwhelming pain, loneliness, or mental health struggles. The decision to take one’s life leaves behind unanswered questions and deep sorrow for family and friends.

  • Suicide affects all ages and races equally.

  • It can happen to anyone, regardless of background or circumstance.

  • Loved ones often experience intense grief, guilt, and confusion.

Recognizing these facts helps us understand why it is crucial to offer support and compassion to those who are struggling. No one should face these feelings alone.

Finding Strength in Connection

One of the most powerful ways to cope with crisis is to find your supports. This means reaching out to people who care about you and letting them know what you are going through. It can be a family member, friend, counselor, or support group.

Here are some ways to build your support network:

  • Talk openly about your feelings with someone you trust.

  • Join support groups where you can share experiences with others who understand.

  • Seek professional help from therapists or counselors trained in crisis intervention.

  • Use helplines like the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988) or Crisis Text Line (741-741).

Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It shows you value your life and want to find a way forward.

Practical Steps to Hold On for Just Another Day

When the pain feels unbearable, it can be hard to imagine a future beyond the crisis. Taking small, manageable steps can help you hold on and find hope.

  • Focus on the present moment. Try to get through the next hour or day rather than thinking too far ahead.

  • Create a safety plan. Write down emergency contacts, coping strategies, and places where you feel safe.

  • Engage in activities that bring you comfort, such as walking, listening to music, or journaling.

  • Avoid isolation. Spend time with people who make you feel supported and understood.

These actions can provide a lifeline during dark times and remind you that you are not alone.

Supporting Loved Ones Left Behind

When someone dies by suicide, their loved ones face a unique and painful grief. They may struggle with feelings of guilt, anger, and confusion. Supporting those left behind is just as important as supporting those in crisis.

Ways to help grieving loved ones include:

  • Listening without judgment. Allow them to express their feelings openly.

  • Offering practical help like meals, errands, or company.

  • Encouraging professional support such as grief counseling or support groups.

  • Being patient. Grief takes time and looks different for everyone.

Showing compassion and presence can make a significant difference in their healing process.

Resources for Help and Hope

Many organizations provide valuable support and information for those affected by suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) offers local chapters, educational materials, and events to raise awareness.
